Classes
Kumon provides individualised Maths and English programmes. Students attend once or twice a week on a drop-in basis within the session times, and work based on their own individual development plan. Students, on average, will spend 30 minutes per subject in class.

Kumon programme complements the National Curriculum and our objective is to achieve the full potential of each child and for them to work beyond their school level. This will not only improve their confidence and concentration but will make them independent learners.

Ages and Levels Covered
Wood Green centre provides maths and English learning programmes and the majority of our students attend schools within the area and live in the local community. Progress does not depend on age and if younger students have ability they can move swiftly through the work and be ahead of their school level. Equally, less confident children who are struggling at school can progress at a pace to suit them. Children of all ages and abilities study maths and English at our centre.

Students work under close supervision initially to settle into their new routine and receive guidance to help establish the new study skills. Regular attendance and close supervision helps me to plan their work and fulfil their needs in order to develop and maximise their potential.

The normal class routine for Maths students is to do oral reading before doing the written work in order to bring focus and develop their mental ability. Students also get tested on their timetable skills orally before doing their work. Younger students do supplementary work like 'numberboard challenge' (magnetic board game designed to develop hand eye co-ordination and number sequencing skills).

Similarly, with the English programme, students read aloud their work to achieve greater command of the English language. At certain levels students are provided with spelling books to practise at home and are tested at the centre before doing their written work. We also provide a 'Recommended Reading List' and students are encouraged to read books from this list to improve their reading skills and become fluent readers.

Each piece of work is timed, whether done at home or at the centre. Timing of work is essential for us to assess the child's concentration and their mental ability. Once marked, any errors are corrected by the student independently where possible. This encourages greater confidence and boosts self-esteem as well as addressing any misunderstanding or careless errors. This will ensure that the student will not encounter any problems with their homework.

New topics are generally tackled in class, enabling a student to ask questions and feel confident prior to receiving further work to practise the subject at home. We strive to make students self-learners and as independent as possible but they may choose to ask for help as needed.

Students receive feedback during class for personal achievements and good attitude but are also able to take responsibility for their own learning by being able to discuss their own developments and goals where appropriate.

When a student completes a level and are ready to take the end of level achievement test, a certificate is awarded together with a report for parents on the results achieved and the plan and content of the forthcoming level. This information is continually discussed with the students to encourage motivation and progression throughout the programme. The centre recognises achievements of all students and displays the results on the monthly newsletters.

We also have seasonal Kumon Quests competitions and prize winners are announced in the monthly newsletter.

Certificates are awarded twice a year to students working at a higher level than their peers and those who have made significant progress in their study skills. Award Ceremonies usually takes place once a year for presentation of Certificates - Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards - as a way of recognition of students achievement and to encourage motivation throughout the programme to completion.
