Welcome to the Blackfen New Eltham Kumon Study Centre

Classes
Initially there will be an information meeting (usually at your home) that lasts about an hour. It gives families an opportunity to find out more about the Kumon programme and ensures that everyone is happy with what they will have to do for the student to get the best possible benefits out of their Kumon study. It also involves a diagnostic test to establish the correct level for the student to start the Kumon programme. Kumon learning is individualised, based upon ability and potential and does not depend on age.

Students attend the Centre once or twice a week, when they will do their Kumon set for that day. Depending upon whether they are studying maths, English or both subjects, they will also do oral reading, number boards and mental maths. We see all students whilst they are in class, observe them working, discuss their progress and monitor progression. Taking all these factors into consideration, we set new goals for study. Students stay at the Centre for as long as is necessary to complete all work and see the Instructor - generally between 30 minutes and an hour.

Kumon also involves a small amount of regular work each day, usually about 10-30 minutes, Each student follows an individual programme, starting at a comfortable level to build confidence and to get used to doing Kumon. This also gives students the opportunity to fill any gaps they may have in their knowledge and skills. Daily work helps students to develop their concentration and independent learning skills.

Ages and Levels Covered
Currently students are aged between 3 and 15 years, although all ages are welcome. There may be a waiting list for pre-school children.

Tuesdays 4.30pm-6pm
Thursdays 4.30pm-6pm
Saturdays 9.30am-11.30am

Tuition Fees
First subject (maths OR English): £55 per calendar month
Maths AND English: £99 per calendar month

Welcome to the Blackfen New Eltham Kumon Study Centre. My name is Susan Baylis and I am the Instructor for the Blackfen Centre, based at the popular Blackfen School for Girls. Having lived in this area for over 25 years, I originally trained as a teacher and am extremely enthusiastic about the Kumon method, particularly now that I can see the progress that students can make. As the parent of a Kumon student I understand what's involved at home as well!

I also teach English as a Second/Other Language (ESOL) to adults and find this experience helpful to my Kumon students who speak English as a second or third language. In the past I have also worked closely with dyslexic learners. This year I shall be completing my PGCE at the University of Greenwich.

About Us
The Blackfen New Eltham Kumon Centre provides individually-set maths and English programmes for students of all ages and abilities and working with students to improve their confidence and study skills. The Centre is based at Blackfen School for Girls, a popular destination school that encourages community use. Classes run in the air-conditioned 14-19 Building and there are ample car parking facilities and a pleasant, relaxed waiting area where parents can meet, exchange information and experiences, and share the success of their children as they progress through their individual programmes. Students are aged from 3 to 15 years, from both state and independent schools. Many are now entering their fourth or fifth year with us and have demonstrated considerable success at the Centre and at school. Kumon study has boosted many students' self esteem, improved their concentration and developed their abilities in English and maths.
