Classes
A Kumon class is not like a traditional school classroom as each student works on his or her own piece of work, alongside children of different ages and abilities.Children are encouraged to work quietly and independently and to be respectful of other students' study time, thereby creating a purposeful and focused atmosphere in the class. Class visits are enjoyable and motivational for the students as they receive positive feedback and praise from both the instructor and support assistants, selected for the academic prowess in maths and English but also their ability to empathise with students from a wide range of backgrounds. Children typically attend class for on average 30mins per subject and are asked to attend within a specific time frame to ensure that individual attention is available for each child as and when needed.
The Kumon programmes do not follow the National Curriculum but underpin it by ensuring solid foundations in the basics required for numeracy and literacy. Children follow a clear sequential programme at a pace that is right for each individual and therefore the programmes are suitable for both children requiring additional support outside of the traditional school environment through to those seeking to challenge themselves over and above current expectations. Many children study above school level as the programmes encourage the development of potential.
Ages and Levels Covered
The Hazlemere Centre attracts children from across the local area, including the surrounding villages and towns.Children are accepted from reception onwards and attend class at least once a week, studying either maths or English or both, depending on their individual needs. An initial, comprehensive assessment of a child's strengths and weaknesses is undertaken prior to them starting their programme of choice, in order to ensure that an appropriate start point is selected for them.

Additional Information
New students are welcomed by an assistant and will be guided through the class routine until it is familiar enough for them to become independent. Self esteem increase as students take responsibility for their own learning, so all students, even the very young ones, are encouraged to organise their own work in the classroom. Completed homework is exchanged for new, with assistants recording the results whilst the student completes their classwork which includes additional activities such as oral maths or reading. Supervision of classwork is undertaken by the instructor and her team of senior assistants, with guidance being given as and when appropriate. Feedback is given to each child on a regular basis, reviewing current progress and setting short and long term goals, encouraging ownership of their work. Feedback is always positive and supportive and students are also awarded stickers (which they can exchange for prizes) for returning completed homework and for completing the day's classwork Certificates are also awarded for the successful completion of each level within the programme.
