Further Details
Classes
Kumon provides individualised Maths and English programmes. Attendance at class is on a "drop-in" basis during class times when each child works on their own individualised study programme.. Children take approximately 20-30 minutes per subject and attend class once or twice a week. The Kumon programmes do not follow the national curriculum but work in a logical sequential way to develop mathematics and English skills to a level equivalent to "A" level topics. All children are able to work at the most suitable pace for themselves meaning it is suitable for children requiring support through to those requiring additional challenge to school work. Many of our children study above school level as the programme encourages development of potential.
Ages and Levels Covered
The Stamford centre attracts students from all areas of the town as well as from surrounding villages, extending as far as Oundle. Students attend either or both classes on a regular basis. The Kumon programme enables all children to study work at the most appropriate level for their individual ability at that time .Each child attends on a "drop-in" basis allowing for approximately 30 minutes per subject studied. All newly enrolled students are guided through the class process by the class assistants who ensure they are welcomed, find their work quickly and swap completed homework for the work set for the following week. Students work under close supervision initially to settle into their new routine and receive guidance to help establish their new study skills. The time spent in class is invaluable in understanding a child's needs and how best to support and develop them. This observation time ensures work set can be individualised by the Instructor to support their development and maximise their potential. New topics are generally tackled in class, enabling a student to ask questions and feel confident prior to receiving further work to practise the subject at home. Once the class work has been completed, students may take part in supplementary activities such as the "numberboard challenge" (a magnetic board game designed to develop hand eye co-ordination and number sequencing skills), reading from our library or testing mental maths skills such as "times tables" practice. Once marked, any errors in classwork are corrected by the student assuring a positive outcome, with all work completed as correct. This encourages greater confidence and boosts self-esteem as well as addressing any misunderstandings or careless errors to ensure the student is in the best position to tackle their homework. At all times students are observed working but are able to ask for help themselves as needed, particularly as they begin to develop self-learning skills and are able to work with less dependency on the centre staff. Students receive feedback during class for personal achievements and good attitude but are also able to take responsibility for their own learning by being able to discuss their own development and goals where appropriate. Children collect the reward stickers do so at the end of class and receive a £1 coin on completion of their record card. For those students taking the end of level Achievement Test, a certificate is awarded together with a report for parents on the results achieved and the plan and content of the forthcoming level. This information is also discussed with the student to encourage motivation and progression throughout the programme. We join in Kumon competitions throughout the year, including the holiday Quests. Prizes being determined in a class draw. Award ceremonies take place twice a year to recognise the progress of students. Certificates are awarded to students working at a higher level than their peers and those who have made significant progress in their study skills. These award ceremonies are just one of a number of ways that we recognise student achievement and encourage motivation throughout the programme..
