There is a wide range of tutors across London with differing styles, approaches and techniques. By knowing what it is that you are looking for and asking the right questions from the beginning, you can save yourself a great deal of time and money. Don’t settle for a mediocre tutor; plan your questions before arranging a first session and be selective. A private tutor can be a huge influence on a tutee's ongoing approach to learning as well as their current education. It is subsequently worth taking time and effort to ensure that you get the right fit.
Beyond a tutor’s qualifications, experience and security checks, what questions do I need to ask to ensure that I have chosen a good tutor?
Selecting a tutor can be a time consuming, expensive and stressful process. Asking yourself (and the tutor) the right questions from the outset can reduce much of these worries and ensure that your expectations are matched. Ideally, take your time to interview a range of tutors and ask whether they would be happy to do a trial session initially. Do not be afraid to ask potential tutors about their tutoring style, approach and methods specific to your required level or ability. The clarity of their answers will soon reveal their level of experience, confidence and general manner.
Every student is unique and should be treated as such. It is the responsibility of the tutor to adapt their style to suit each student. Whilst it is a general rule that you largely get what you pay for, it is your responsibility to judge whether you feel a tutor will work for you. Consider the following questions in your evaluation...
Does the tutor take an active effort from the outset in understanding your requirements, expectations and objectives?
Do you feel like they have asked enough questions to get a comprehensive understanding of your needs? Eg syllabus details, current ability, objectives of tuition, exam dates clarified, areas of weakness discussed etc.
Do they sound approachable and capable of building up a good rapport with the student in question?
Are they organised and methodical? Following the first session, have they recommended how ongoing lessons should be structured, such as providing a tuition schedule or set of challenging yet achievable targets?
Does the tutor regularly revise previously set targets and adjust the pace of work accordingly to suit the student?
Does the tutor bring along relevant study materials and have access to suitable learning resources?
Are you confident that any objectives the tutor has set are realistic, constructive and manageable?
Do they take on board any criticisms or issues which have been raised and actively adapt?
If tuition sessions take place outside of your home, is the location a suitably stimulating, challenging and supportive environment?
