It is even more imperative in Biology than it is in Chemistry and Physics, in my opinion, to choose a textbook that not only covers the requirements of your syllabus but is also a text that appeals to you in style and substance. It is essential at A-Level and beyond to hit the ground running. Topics should be studied in full to the required level within days of tackling the subject in class as the academic workload is demanding.
A "sandwich" approach is advisable. Read the section being studied in a good revision guide e.g. CGP syllabus-specific Revision Guide. Next make essential notes only from your textbook, adding relevant information from the revision guide using shorthand, lists, flow diagrams, etc. When the topic or sub-topic has been completed, read through your summary notes and the Revision Guide again to reinforce your knowledge and understanding.
Practise relevant examination questions as soon as possible and discuss your answers with teachers and tutors. There is never any opportunity to relax. At A-Level and beyond the topics come fast and furious! The ability to be self-disciplined and systematic is essential for achieving top grades. Always try to expand your knowledge by reading articles in current magazines and journals and never underestimate the value of natural history and biology-related programmes on terrestrial, satellite and cable TV channels.
Always remember to enjoy your studies.
