Campbell Biology, Ninth edition (Pearson)
This is a very contemporary text book that I use as something of a bible for teaching A level. It is really an undergraduate/professional text book and at my previous work place, we all dipped into it on occasions when we had papers to write or talks to prepare and we wanted to be sure that we had our facts quite right!
What I particularly like about it is the clarity of the written explanations and, even more spectacular, the beautiful diagrams. Cell division almost comes alive and no one will be in an doubt about the biochemistry behind muscle contraction after they have read the relevant section in this book.
