Chemistry (Palgrave Foundations Series)
Authored by Rob Lewis and Wynne Evans and published as part of the Palgrave Foundations Series, this book is a little known textbook among advanced level students in schools and sixth form colleges. It has been primarily written for university students who are following a foundation course in chemistry in their first year. This book is a clearly structured and well written introduction to chemical science. Devoid of a plethora of coloured pretty pictures, the book covers all the essential principles of the subject in required depth and more. For students to aim for an A* grade at A level from the very beginning of their course, a fair number of good searching questions are included at the end of each unit.
Wherever calculations are involved, the authors have attempted to explain the mathematics that go with it. With the inclusion of chapters on Nuclear and Radiochemistry; Forensic Chemistry; Environmental Chemistry; Chemistry of Saving Lives and the Hydrogen Economy, Rob Lewis and Wynne Evans have tried to stir an interest and passion for the subject in young people.
Overall, this book is a valuable resource which will challenge the stronger students to think and it will certainly not daunt but encourage those students who are less confident in their ability especially due to inadequate and poor teaching.
