The best resources for A level chemistry I have found so far have been:
1. Collins Advanced Science: Chemistry by Chris Conoley and Phil Hills, 3rd edition, Collins, 2008.
One of the problems with A level course books is that they relate to particular exam boards and only cover a small part of the specification. I recommend Conoley and Hills because of its scope and clear presentation, high quality illustrations and a style which does not over-complicate the subject. It is also suitable for students to do advance reading before their course starts.
2. Calculations in AS/A level Chemistry by Jim Clark, Longman, 2010.
This is a practical book and easy to use as a reference as well as a a course-companion. The author addresses himself directly to students in a clear, down-to-earth manner. It also provides a practical advice on how to handle calculation-based questions in exams.
The author has also provided an excellent online resource at www.chemguide.co.uk. This site has some very useful cross-indexing, so you can start where you need to, and then follow links back to essential prior reading.
