A-level English

Don’t get too bogged down in the tiny details of mark schemes. Though it’s important that you know what’s expected of you in an exam or coursework assignment, try and enjoy the process of writing your answer too.

It’s vital to connect with the text. Think about how you feel about the literature in front of you, question why you have that opinion, whether you can back it up with evidence. Think about context (the historical and social factors or personal experience feeding into the writing) and what effect the author might have wanted to have on the reader, and why, and what you think about that. If you are studying a text or topic that really inspires or interests you, read more widely on the subject. I have taught students that are so chained to the mark scheme that they have failed to take a step back and look at the wider implications of the texts they were studying. Take the time to do that, and you’ll notice the difference in your writing.

The original thoughts upon which your essays are based should come from you. Enjoy the challenge of expressing yourself, which is far more rewarding than simply churning out someone else’s opinions. If you have personally engaged and struggled with the fascinating issues that arise during the stimulating study of literature, it will show in your answers.

The joy of studying English lies in being able to make connections and articulate thoughts yourself. There is a real sense of achievement in being able to put together an argument, back up what you think with evidence, and explain yourself coherently. It’s a skill you can utilise in all walks of life and will stand you in good stead whatever your plans are for the future. Take the initiative to develop your thoughts and articulate your opinions and you will have gained far more from your English course than just a qualification at the end.
