A-level English

To be a good writer you have to read widely.

I suggest you read two great books and describe what it is about the writer's style and technique that makes these books so successful.

The first one is To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee. The second is The Old man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway.

When you have finished studying these two books, look back at your own reading history and pick out what you think is a well written book.

Examine three separate instances where you find it particularly effective.

Then consider why, in your opinion, these passages work so well; look carefully at the language the writer uses.
