The tutor one chooses should be easily approachable and have a good temperament. The tutor should have the ability to teach effectively and communicate material in different ways and techniques to accommodate students from differing backgrounds and with varying abilities. You want to make sure the tutor is qualified to the teach the subjects first and foremost.
The questions a parent should ask:
- What experience do you have?
- When can we see the results of the tuition?
- How can we help to supplement the tuition?
Selecting the right tutor, and making sure the tutor is giving the support needed is of course very important. It shouldn't be assumed that all tutors of the same discipline will provide an identical service.
I have addressed this in an article more specifically to tuition in mathematics.
