Over the last few years, resitting examinations for modules of AS and A2 Mathematics has become more common. Consequently, assignments to help students prepare for these resits has become a major part for my work as a tutor.
Sometimes a student will be in a position where they need to resit not just an individual module, but multiple modules over the same examination period, sometimes all of C1, C2, C3, C4, S1, S2, and M1. In such assignments I have devoted up to eight hours a week with a student who wanted intensive support.
My experience to date had helped me develop specific knowledge and techniques for resit support. I have an expectation of the mathematical skills and knowledge that I need to check when I start, and where I may have to focus.
In particular, when I start supporting revision for module C1, I prompt students to demonstrate the technique that is necessary in algebra, surds, and coordinate geometry. This is important before moving on to look at exam questions.
I have also found that there are elements of the syllabus that are often not taught well enough or too quickly in class, and which I have to address in more depth. Examples would be Binomial Expansions and Solving Trigonometric Equations.
Examination technique is also something I address as tuition progresses. Familiarity with question structure is important, and I can prompt or demonstrate optimum presentation of solutions.
With most students, a complete 90 minute paper can usually be attempted and worked though in an hour session.
When working with a student, the pace of progress and the amount of work done will be dependent on their preparation. For example, if a student attempts two past papers in their own time before tuition, these can both be completely reviewed and discussed within an hour.
With all students the aim will be to make the most of their ability and get the highest grade they can in their exams.
For many students this will entail getting a pass, but for students with higher aspirations it may be that they want to get as close they can to 100%. In that case it will be an assignment where I can address finer points of understanding and even additional technique.
