Teachers teaching a vocational subjects are required under the LLUK guidelines (long learning) to embed the key skills (literacy, numeracy and ICT) into their lessons. This on the surface seems a tall order for the teacher of the arts.

I have since been looking at how I embed key skills and I have come up with a few suggestions: Literacy - listening, reading, speaking and communication - all of some of these elements should occur in lesson with discussing visual pictures, trying out new ideas, creating work and feeding back, crit sessions, discussions, testing theories, open questioning etc. It's not easy to remember always within an active based learning subject.

Numeracy (dance) - through counting sequences in music, musical counts, step patterns, time signatures and beats (fractions)  and finally ICT - using the video camera immeasurably helps the student to see their work visually, self evaluate, assess and it can be uploaded to a computer fairly easily. It acts as an archive for the teacher.
