Public performance requires certain rules. It is a part of teacher's job to help the student with the process of memorising.
There are three types of memory:
1: Visual Memory; 2: Auditory Memory; 3: Kinesthetic Memory (based on body movements)
As Hallam says in her book, (Instrumental Teaching, a practical guide to better teaching and learning, Heinemann Educational Publishes, 1998) 'remembering information is something that only develops gradually'. Consequently, memory needs to be developed at all the stages of the learning process.
In order to develop these three kinds of memories, the teacher could:
- demonstrate with examples on the instrument: short melodic phrases with musical intentions, fingerings and bowings.
- give clues for understanding the piece with aural and analysis skills: a piece's structure, key, shape of the phrase.
- help memorise body movements: breathing, fingerings and bowings.
One has to remember that memory should be exercised in every-day practice to increase confidence in playing, and to help go on stage with much less stress!
