Why choose the cello to learn?
This is often a question I am asked when I play demo concerts in school assemblies and junior string concerts. My answer is simple. The cello is the most amazingly diverse instrument in the orchestra. No other instrument can sound like a beautiful voice, or chug away on the bass line with the bass trombone.
I started the cello aged 8 and fell in love with the sound. I had seen many demonstrations from violin teachers and the high pitch did not appeal to me. As soon as I heard the cello I knew it was what I wanted to do. My early years were fast and free flowing and I was soon a member of my county youth orchestra and I discovered more about the cello and how it blended with every section of the orchestra. Being a cellist we are naturally very versatile. We can add a glorious rich bass line to any string melody, or join the Horns with a soaring 'John Williams' type melody and the next moment we are with the full brass section.
This is an exciting discovery for a cellist and it starts right from the moment you begin lessons.
When I started the cello all those years ago I never realised what a rich tapestry the cello could weave. I love letting others discover the wonders of the cello and why it is the best instrument of them all. Once you start playing the cello, the feeling will live with you forever.
