So much great music has been written for the clarinet. From jazz to classical the clarinet is really spoilt for brilliant repertoire. However, have you had a look into the less well know music written for clarinet?
Here is an example of a small not so well know piece of music for clarinet.
Rebecca Clarke Prelude and Allegro for viola and clarinet
Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) was born and raised in England. She studied at the Royal College and was the first pupil of Charles Stanford. Clarke went on to become one of the first female orchestral players in Britain. She enjoyed a successful career as a freelance violinist. She composed a number of chamber works and is best know for her viola sonata. She composed her duo for clarinet and viola in 1941 (originally written for her brother and sister-in-law).
Neoclassical in style the piece explores the rich and varied colours produced by this interesting combination. This was one of Clarke’s last compositions. She moved to America and married which saw the end of her compositional career.
Have a listen, see what you think. Have a go at exploring the clarinets endless and interesting repertoire!
