The main problem with singing honestly is the fear of being laughed at, so most people, consciously or subconsiously mimic the sound and style of whoever they admire most and hide behind that mask. Feeling safe enough to find your own voice is key. The sounds we hear when we sing are so different from the sounds the listener hears, it takes a "third ear" who we trust to encourage us to sing honestly and openly.
The fashion for a quick fix, I feel, is detrimental to this goal. Singing should surely sound natural, but sometimes it takes a while to build the technique to obtain that natural sound. Natural is also unique.
Surely it is worth working with a teacher who can help to build a strong techique to enable the singer to sing to best of their ability and who build a solid technique gradually and carefully that lasts?
"Belt" is a very specific sound, mostly misused and mostly destructive. Somewhere in the last 20 years we have been fed "Belt" as the ultimate singing sound particulary for Music Theatre. It is often achieved by "quick fix" and unfortunately voices are damaged. Sometimes that damage is permanent. Is loud the only sound that is desired? What happened to beautiful and subtle?
Singing should be something we enjoy to do all our lives taking a bit of time to learn how not to misuse our unique instruments is surely worthwhile.
