Classical Singing

It is very important for singers to translation any foreign music they have to sing. Most songs come with a poetic translation written underneath the original language but the translation is often inaccurate.

I would recommend to any of my students to translation the text word for word. This not only helps understand the text better but will be invaluable for performance. Singers can add the correct emotion at the right time, place accents on the important words rather than 'and' or 'the', and communicate to the audience the story of the text.

There are several websites which are great for translation:

www.leo.org

www.wordreference.com (these sites also come with sound files to help with pronunciation)

A book I would recommend for the same purpose, if singing German Lied, is:

Lieder Line by Line by Lois Phillips
