Why learn a singing technique? And what is exactly a singing technique?

Breathing exercises, posture, resonance of the voice, interpretation and pronunciation: all these things concur to improve your singing. It is possible to develop a voice which has a wide range, many colors and projection, together with a beautiful tone.

Most voices have limits or defects, and learning a good technique is the only way to overcome them.

It’s important for a teacher to be able to demonstrate the process involved in the mastering of the belcanto art .

Singers use a strange vocabulary: except for “open your mouth”, all the other phrases are really curious. “You don’t support your voice”, or “project the voice in the mask”, and so on. If a teacher doesn’t have a physiological knowledge, and can explain such phrases, a singing technique is unable to be understood.

For example when we learn to play an instrument, or a sport, or painting, we need a strong motivation to start learning. But then we need tools, and to learn how everything works together.

Why should singing be different?

Singing is spontaneous and wonderful and nothing can change this. Learning a technique is not easy; actually, learning any discipline is not easy.

If you want to play football an afternoon kick around with your friends is fine. But it is very different if you wish to join a professional team.

Why should singing be different?

Sacrifices and hard work,  behind the curtains of the stage and the stars: this is the life of an artist. And one day our  technique will become a second nature.

Maria Callas, the famous soprano, a genius of singing said:

“M.tro Serafin once told me: it will arrive a moment where you have to forget your studies, forget difficult phrases, difficult high notes. You have to forget everything and love the music, love the phrases you are singing, living the words. With the inspiration the music will become alive: this is the goal that an artist should have to achieve”.
