One's compositions are very personal things and displaying them to the public can be an intimidating prospect, especially for a new composer. So how can one overcome these initial trepidations?
The first and most important step is to gain confidence in your abilities, this is often very difficult, especially at the outset, but I find the best way is to give private showings of your work to friends and/or family. These are people you are confident will give you supportive advice and any criticisms will be delivered in a helpful and encouraging way. Continue this step, perhaps increasing audience numbers; organise private concerts of your work, until you feel you are ready for your pieces to be heard by a greater number.
In order to have your piece performed you must find people to play it. I recommend choosing performers who you are friendly with and you are confident they will do your piece justice. Unwilling performers are a nightmare for a beginner composer and so I recommend starting with friends who will help and guide you through the rehearsal process. This will give you a good foundation for any future problems.
As your confidence grows you can submit you pieces to competitions, concerts and workshops gaining more and more experience in composition performance.
