I would highly recommend every student gets The Dave Hassell Graded Course for Drum Kit book. This is by far the best way to learn to play drums as all the pieces have a backing track, putting your playing into context and making it more fun to practice.

Every drummer should listen to:

Elvin Jones

Tony Williams

Roy Haynes

and any recording by James Brown and Stevie Wonder.

All this music has superb drumming.
