When we speak in our mother tongue and we can't find the word we are looking for, do we simply abandon the conversation, walk away? No, of course not, we look for other words to illustrate what we are trying to say, we might even tell our listener that we cant find the word we are looking for. Do they walk away? No, the conversation continues and we get there in the end, so it is the same when we communicate in a foreign language.
Too many of us are put off by the idea that our listener might think that our English or French is not good enough. Don't worry, it sounds a lot stranger to you than to your listener, especially if they are native speakers, because you are speaking THEIR language but YOU are speaking a foreign, strange language that your ears are not used to hearing, your mouth and voice are not used to forming the new shapes and sounds necessary to speak another language.
The first thing that my students always tell me, without exception, is that thier grammar is bad, well, ok it might be but it doesn't or shouldn't stop you from speaking, apply the above, use what you do know, you will get there in the end.
Th trouble with grammar for a lot of people is that they were taught in schools, by rote in a way that was not only difficult but boring enough to send you to sleep, no wonder we are put off language learning. How about learning grammar through mime, discovering it for yourself and enjoying yourself at the same time. I can promise you this is a lot more fun and before you know it, grammar, once you see it in action and in context comes quite naturally, after all, it is how you learned the grammar of your native language.
Don't hesitate for a moment longer, dont put off learning that language you have always wanted to speak. Open up that whole new world waiting for you that only language can. Do it today.
