During the many (over 20) years of experience I've had as an EFL tutor, I've come across many students struggling with pronunciation. Some of them were shy/lacked confidence/hindered by a strong “L1”(first language) – interference. Some were adamant that they were incapable of producing certain English sounds.
Well, I firmly believe that there is no need to worry! Learners of ANY language background should be able to produce the sounds of ANY other language – it's only a matter of practice...and, of course, knowing how to do it. Just think of the fact that babies are born with the same speech organs all over the world. To start off with, they all make the same babbling noises - in China, Peru, or the UK - wherever they are born. It's only at a later stage of language acquisition that they begin to imitate the sounds that they hear in their immediate environment.
So, yes, YOU CAN speak English with better pronunciation and intonation – you just need to be shown how to. Believe in yourself and trust your teacher…A good tutor will make you feel at ease. And provide plenty of practice. And give you guidance and feedback. And smile:)...So why not give it a try?
