I learnt the flute because my Grandad gave me his spare flute! I started off teaching myself with the Abracadabra book and then got group lessons at school. I then got a private teacher to take me from grade 5-8 and really enjoyed my lessons. I also started flute teaching when I was 14, first teaching my friends, then gradually building up a good reputation in Winchester and getting recommended by word of mouth.
I decided to study music and music technology at A level and this helped me greatly with my flute studies, I passed my performance diploma in my first year at 6th form college. My teacher was brilliant and very supportive of everything I wanted to play, and this was when I started to experiment with jazz and improvisation. At this time I now had about 10 pupils a week ranging from ages 4- 40.
I joined a band Juggla Heroes and played flute and sang. We were almost signed but then I went to Europe to be a children's courier.
At University after my season as a children's courier I got a new flute teacher Jennifer George who is fab. She helped me to develop a niche in modern flute pieces and also supported me in new projects such as my band Mindfunk. I also started to play in pit orchestras doubling on alto sax, flute and piccolo. She also gave me tips on teaching higher standards of pupils although I still really love teaching beginners.
I now specialise in modern and jazz/funk flute with a great interest in extended technique. I still really enjoy playing classical music and I really love the French romantic flute pieces.
My aims for the future are to keep teaching, keep gigging, and playing in pit orchestras.
