There are a number of great resources on the market for becoming a profressional flautist but here are a few I would definitely recommend:
'Becoming an Orchestral Musician' by Richard Davis - if you are serious about becoming an orchestral musician then this book has a lot of useful hints and tips about how to get there. I am constantly referring to it and it has had fantastic reviews from Classical Music, Classic FM, The Magazine and many more.
Every flautist should know that if they want to get anywhere in the business that their technique has to be flawless. The following book has been described by many as 'The Bible' of flute technique:
'17 Daily Exercises' by Taffanel and Gaubert - these two flautists are very well known and come from the French Flute School. They have a range of repertoire available, which at times can be quite expensive.
Marcel Moyse is another great one for materials regarding flute technique and tone - if you are to go into any great music store, for example - Jonathan Myall Music (aka Just Flutes) or Top Wind, then you will find a large amount of books by this amazing flute player.
Trevor Wye has also produced 6 books, covering tone, technique, articulation, intonation and vibrato, breathing and scales, and advanced practice. Some of his work is derived from Taffanel and Gaubert but nonetheless, he has had an incredible career as a performer.
Another great book that works on the core foundations of flute playing is 'The 28 Day Warm Up Book' by Paul Edmund-Davies - this incredible book has a variety of activities to really work you hard across the entire range of the flute.
Finally, I would recommend that all serious flautists get out to see and listen to as many concerts as possible. It is here that you can encounter what the UK is producing today and get to know the musicians who are in the places you want to be.
