I know from my own experience that learning a language is not easy, but like the saying goes "If you have a WILL, there is a WAY".  Below are 10 tips that you can put into practice to make your learning a language a SUCCESS.

  1. Set realistic expectations.  You mst accept the fact that you will not understand everthing in your language learning process.  You need to practise more and more and in the course of practising, you will make many errors, but do remember that you will learn from your mistakes.
  2. Break study time into smaller chunks.  You will learn more effectively and retain more when you study frequently and for shorter periods of time.
  3. Learn vocabulary effectively.  Do remember that vocabulary is the most essential element of communication.
  4. Practise language effectively.  Whenever possible, speak the language aloud rather than reciting it silently to yourself.
  5. Do homework conscientiously.  Homework offers you a golden opportunity to practise your language skills and you will have the luxury of time.
  6. Form study groups.  Meet regularly with classmates to work together on homework assignments, to learn vocabulary, to study for tests, or just to practise speaking the language.
  7. Identify your learning styles.  Each person has his/her own learning style and everyone learns at a different pace.  Think how every teacher has their own teaching styles.
  8. Maximise your language exposure.  If your ultimate goal is language fluency, then it is important to know that you will become more fluent more quickly if you increase the amount of contact you have with the language.  To do so, watch movie/tv programs in the target language.
  9. Spend time on task.  Use the time you have in class each week to work on your language skills.
  10. Communicate with your teacher.  Take responsibility for your learning. Communicate with your teacher any problems that you may be having with your learning.

Good luck with your learning.
