Tutors need to use different books depending on the level. Most people's aim is to be able to hold a good conversation. In a classroom you only have limited time to improve your oral but with a private tutor, you have their undivided attention to oral, written and grammatical aspects. A grammar point you did not understand ? Tell the tutor and in a few words with good explanations it will become much clearer, and you will come out thinking why you did not understand it previously.
I use different books for adults. For example, Facon de Parler has been a favourite of mine. It helps you to speak in no time at all. I also include the use of some others such as Tu Parles, Tu Parles Encore or I speak French. They are conversation books for children, but I also use them for adults.
The choice of books depends on the individual. A lesson usually starts with free conversation where students will talk about themselves - Qu’est ce que tu as fait hier ? Ou qu’est ce que tu feras demain ?
A great deal can be achieve in one hour every week, and GCE A-level or GCSE students can improve by one or 2 levels.
For children, there are lots of games for language learning, such as puzzles, who’s who, singing, game cards, colouring, and movement songs and games. I like to use a book called Alouette, which children really enjoy.
