Many students find the jump from GCSE Chemistry to AS level Chemistry a big one. Having to take on new concepts, more independent study and the more accelerated pace expected in the sixth form can leave some students struggling to keep up in the first few months.
However, missing the vital basic concepts in the first term of AS Chemistry can affect both the confidence of the student and their final marks.
It is a good idea to give your son or daughter a head start by ensuring that they don't forget everything they learnt at GCSE over the long, long summer between Year 11 and Year 12. Encourage them to keep their GCSE notes and start reading ahead in the last few weeks before the start of the Autumn term. Try to get a copy of the text book they will need - this is often a good 'wake-up' call!
If you wish to find a tutor for your budding Chemist, look early as most tutors are fully booked by the time students start feeling the need for assistance. With some schools offering module exams in January, panic often sets in about November, which is usually far too late!
