English Literature can change your life. English Language can help you get through life. What an amazing subject! I would love to show you how exciting English can be - from Shakespeare's witches in "Macbeth" to Roald Dahl's version of the same! Each piece of writing has something to share.
Tutoring is not only about achieving academic potential but instilling the confidence in a child to make it happen. Sometimes English can seem daunting but it really is easy for anyone to access. A child just needs to be shown how. It can be through a logical step-by-step approach or a more creative, kinesthetic way. English is for everyone.
There is nothing more satisfying then when a child or young person really "gets" and understands what a writer is tying to say - after all English Literature is the study of life. For a writer from "hundreds of years ago and I can't even understand what they are saying!" to connect with a child and share the message really is a special moment. To help that happen is a great privilege.
Of course, children need to be taught correct grammar and punctuation as this is a necessary means of communication - however much they enjoy text talk! English Literature and English Language are both about communicating - whether it is about ideas and themes or an application for a job. Both are essential skills in life.
I could talk about how wonderful English is for a lot longer (at least another 500-600 pages!) as, like most English teachers, I never run out of things to say. But you could always find out for yourself....and ask me!
