3 things to remember - answering an exam question

  1. Read the question.  Okay, so I know this one sounds obvious, but you’d be amazed how many students start answering the question without actually having read what the examiner wants them to do.  Exams are time-pressured, but always take the time to read it through thoroughly.
  2. Take a minute to think about the question.  Yes, you will feel like you have to answer the question a.s.a.p, but better to take a few minutes to think it through clearly and know what you’re doing than rush through something that you’re unsure of.  Take a deep breath, stay calm and think it through.
  3. Explain what you’re doing.  Ever just seen a page of numbers and letters and thought ‘What on earth does this all mean?’  Well, the examiner will think exactly the same if that’s all you put down on the answer paper.  Talk the examiner through each stage to show you know exactly what you’re doing (you'll get more marks that way, even if the end result isn't right) and help you keep track of where you are.
