Mathematics at all levels, but particularly up to GCSE is generally thought of as a "hard" subject. something which requires special aptitude and which is a grind. Nothing could be further from the truth. Mathematics is really a question of solving puzzles, something most people enjoy and do on a regular basis, whether it is a SUDOKU, a crossword or a riddle.
If mathematics is taught as an unremitting collection of examples, it is not surprising that many are put off the idea, but, if it is thought of and taught as fun and enjoyable, most people find it to be considerably easier. Understanding how to tease out answers can be very great fun. Finding the processes which allow for the solution of ever more complex queries can be satisfying.
The old-fashioned methods of teaching maths have turned many people off the whole idea, but approaching it as a expedition into new and uncharted areas of logic can be stimulating and above all, great fun.
