Mathematics is to do with solving problems, by following rules as well as the application of techniques. For GCSE Maths, or just Maths in general, these operational procedures are most often universal. The figures may change, but what you do to them to produce the answer/solution to the mathematical problem is the same.
I like to teach my students things that may not be emphasised in school. They certainly weren't when I was a school pupil but I had a great maths teacher. So, wherever you are, thank you Mr Gothard for installing in me the love for this beautiful subject, and teaching us all the "trickery" which made our lives (well definitely mine) a whole lot easier. Today I endevour to pass these skills on to my students.
So far I have helped students at various levels/stages, and most importantly with a range abilities, to improve at least one grade at GCSE, A-level, etc. My message to all students is not to lose hope with maths. It is "easy-peasy lemon-squeezy," trust me. All the best!
