Do you find yourself bogged down by tedious Long Division calculations?

Are you frightened by fractions?

Have you ever wished there could be a quick way of multiplying 5+ digit numbers?

Have you ever wondered about alternative methods for the basics of arithmetic?

Well perhaps Vedic Mathematics is the solution to your problems.

My High school was strongly influenced by Eastern Philosophy and among other things that we did 'differently' was the way we were taught arithmetic and the basics of algebra. The Vedic method applies short concise statements (known as 'Sutrani') to seemingly complicated calculations and generally works much faster than the traditional western methods of arithmetic such as long division.

For example, a method known as 'up on the flag' allows you to reduce most long division sums to a simple matter of basic multiplications.

Another example is known as 'Nikilam navatash charaman dashatha' which translates as 'All from nine and the last from 10' which facilitates subtraction of large numbers without the need for carrying or thinking in tens and units.

There are many more such examples all of which appear to be faster than the standard methods.

Vedic maths could help speed up young students ability to perform the basic calculations required in Key Stage Maths and will certainly provide an alternative path on the way to understanding the subject.

I have maintained my old school textbooks and have accumulated other texts and exercise books on the Vedic methods over the years.

In my experience so far I have had very positive results with this alternative system especially for students struggling with the early stages of equation solving, fractions and algebra.

So why not give the Vedic way a try?
