I'd like to mention how important it is to practice a little everyday - not a large chunk once a week. The brain needs regular 'feeding' with new information. This then allows the brain to process the new information and work with the muscle memory in your hands to help you learn and perform the new rhythm patterns correctly.
It's also very important to say the lesson in rhythm as this demonstrates knowledge in the tabla/dhol without having either drum present. Hope this friendly tip assists all pupils with their learning routine.
A very useful practice tool for Dhol is www.dhollessonsonline.com
This site allows pupils to follow a red circle across written notes which forces students to play in rhythm.
