Interview Skills

Making a good impression is all that really matters at an interview. Before you are called for interview, you will have submitted a CV. On the basis of that, the interviewer will decide that you are suitable to call to interview. The reason you are being interviewed is for the person or panel to judge your suitablility versus other candidates who will also be interviewed.

At interview you will be assessed on appearance, manners, intelligence, judgement, common sense, initiative and confidence. Before the interview, read through your CV again and have others interview you to get practice at answering questions. Research the company, college or organisation beforehand so you can speak with some confidence about. You will do 80 per cent of the talking so have answers prepared.

Look smart and well-dressed. Arrive in good time and be polite to everyone you meet in reception and elsewhere in the organisation. Walk in to the interview room with confidence, looking at the person or persons who are already there. Wait to be greeted. Look and smile back or shake hands if they do so. Wait until you are asked to sit.

Once the interview begins listen and look at the questioner. Think before you speak. Talk clearly and slowly. Be positve - do not say: "I am bored in my present job/ school etc". Instead say: "I need something more challenging". Try to create a conversational tone rather than a rigid question and answer. Do not talk too much. When you have answered a question, sit quietly, face the interviewer and smile.

Your aim is to project yourself as a person who is confident, keen to do the the job/ role and capable of sticking to the course or carrying out the job. Finally thank the interview panel and walk out smiling.

Good Luck
