I often wonder if I would be able to learn Italian as an English student. I believe it must be very difficult – these two languages have completely different roots, and Italian grammar is definitely more complex than English grammar.
As a beginner, you will probably have to struggle with grammar, pronunciation, stress, and you will often feel slow and overwhelmed. But as you go along, you will understand that your main driving force can only be a true, genuine passion for the Italian language.
Sometimes my students have a specific reason to learn Italian: a house in Italy, a holiday plan, Italian friends or relatives. However, I also have students who do not have any kind of bond with Italy. Yet they are so committed that they will eventually get to excellent results despite not needing to speak Italian. They revise our lessons, they do all the homework I give them and they always ask me plenty of questions to better understand what we are talking about.
One of my students is blind, and another is deaf. I must say they are probably the most amazing students I have ever met. This means that if you are deeply interested in broadening your cultural horizons by learning a new language, nothing will prevent you from succeeding. Your passion will always reward you, because it does make the difference.
