It is important to have a good music teacher who can teach you technique, repertoire, improvisation, theory etc.  With Jazz so much can be learnt from listening to live performances, CDs and YouTube.  The lessons need to be fun and interesting and the teacher needs to provide lots of new music to keep the lessons stimulating.
