Can classical singers sing soul and jazz?
The good news is yes - classical singers can learn to sing jazz or pop with the help of an experienced jazz/soul or pop specialist teacher. It always pays to go to a specialist, whatever level or subject you wish to learn, as their expertise can guide you quickly to using the correct techniques.
I would never put myself forward as an opera singing teacher, for example, even though I'm classically trained as I don't have specialist training in opera, although I can approximate operatic vocalisations.
Classical and opera vowel sounds have a very particular sound - that's what makes a classical singer a classical singer!
Likewise, pop, jazz and soul vowels sounds are instantly recognisable as they are much closer to natural speech, coupled with a strong emphasis on consonants. Soul and jazz singers strive to make their singing relaxed, with a mellow round sound, or in the case of pop singers try to produce a distinctive edge, yet make themselves instantly understood.
I've taught a number of very talented classical singers over the years who have an amazing classical technique, and want to try jazz or pop. We work hard at changing from classical to soul/jazz vowels and loosening up phrasing to make the songs sound less stiff and 'correct'.
It can be done - and one of the most important aspects is to listen to a whole ton of pop and jazz singers to get your 'ear' in.
Good luck!
