The teaching of contemporary singing is still a relatively new endeavour. Classical Singing was the Ballet of the Music World, highly skilled and competitive but also exclusive. Contemporary singing techniques are the antithesis of this, available, accessible and varied. One of the fundamental differences is the placement of the tongue within the mouth.
It wasn’t until the late 1980’s that a small camera could be inserted in to a person's throat and it seen that the tongue, a large muscle, was actually moving back into the throat when flattened subsequently putting pressure on the larynx. To counteract that contemporary voice methods teach a variety of methods in order to push the tongue forward and away from the throat to enable vocalization and resonance with ease.
