I predominantly play Funk, African Music, Latin Music and Jazz.
In learning an instrument there are certain technical and theoretical basics that apply to any music, and which make a good foundation for whatever music you want to play, but music is also about feel and the best way to start getting in to that is to listen to different types of music. In other words, if you want to play jazz, listen to as much of it as you can. All these musics inform each other: I'm a better jazz player for having played a lot of African and Latin music, and I bring my knowledge of funk into playing African music. Learning about and listening to different musics, and extending your knowledge of music through what you listen to, is the best way to keep your music fresh, original and exciting, whatever style you want to play.
