Why is (teaching) writing hard?

Tutor Pages » Key Stage 2 English Article by Graham Richardson (SE12)

Graham Richardson A-level Maths Tutor (South East London)

Being set this task (writing an article) reminds me of the subject area I find hardest myself, which is putting pen to paper (or finger to key) and producing words in meaningful grammatical sequences.  My main subjects are maths and physics. I do have some background in literacy since the topic of my PhD thesis was reading and spelling difficulties in children. In my role as tutor, English up to KS3 is only a subsidiary subject, but I have found the pedagogy of developing writing skills, particularly in boys in their early teens, to be far more challenging than explaining the structure of the atomic nucleus. My concern goes wider than boys at KS3 as my experience of teaching psychology at university level, where good essay-writing skills are essential, was that many students lacked sufficiently good command of English to produce work of an acceptable standard. I'm sure tutors in all subjects areas have found themselves spending more time than they would like on addressing the linguistic failings of their students, time that could be more usefully spent on discussion of the subject matter.

I am looking on this "article" as a work in progress.  In the meantime if tutors more experienced in this field can point  to approaches or resources that they have found useful in developing writing skills, I (and I'm sure thousands of others) would be grateful to hear from you.

About the Author

Graham Richardson A-level Maths Tutor (South East London) My approach is to assess the pupil's needs, strengths, and weaknesses carefully at the outset in order to develop a set of goals based on this assessment. The aim is to provide well-structured and clearly presented instruction, which if the student is able and well-motivated will generally lead to progress. If the pupil is poorly motivated and/or has acquired unhelpful learning habits then may need to vary the approach in order to re-engage their interest and/or find a level at which they can perform successfully, and then build on this accomplishment.

For relaxation: I listen to jazz and blues.
