I recommend the following book for parents:
Maths for Mums and Dads by Rob Eastaway
This is an excellent, easy to read and above all, entertaining book that explains how, and most importantly, why, maths is taught the way it is in primary schools today. It shows and explains methods that children will be taught, explaining the maths behind the methods and where common misconceptions or mistakes occur with more traditional methods.
The book stresses the importance of understanding why the method works, rather than just learning a method by rote and not understanding why it works. This understanding enables children to apply their knowledge to other areas of maths (and other subjects, such as science) progressing their learning.
The book includes many games to try out as a family at home and really does put the fun back into numbers for mums and dads who might lack confidence in helping their children with maths.
