Key Stage 3 English

It is important that you are able to write creatively in order to do well in 'Writing to 'Explore, Imagine and Entertain' questions. Here are some tips to help you

1. Write about what you know.  It is perfectly okay, and often a good idea to write about an experience that you have actually had.

2. Use description in your writing.  When doing so, think about your five senses - what can your character feel, see, hear, touch and taste?  Of course you may not be able to write about all the senses, but it is a good idea to think about them to enable your reader to really understand the situation that your character is in.

3. Show don't tell!  The easiest way of doing this is to use speech - make your characters speak to each other!  Speech breaks up your writing and makes it more interesting to read, but don't over do it. Don't let your charcters speak too long about boring things.  Your dialogue (what your characters say) needs to move your story forward somehow, so don't let them ramble on, giving information that doesn't help you tell your story.

There are lots of creative writing books available.  You could try Teach Yourself Creative Writing or subscribe to a Creative Writing Magazine - Writer's Forum and Writing Magazine are both full of lots of good ideas and tips to help improve your writing.
