Key Stage 3 English

I have found that, since punctuation and grammar are not exactly the most popular subjects for Year 7 to 9, while being essential to their literacy and success as writers, a good basic textbook that is easy to understand and use is a must!

My trusted guide that I use, with adults too, as it is clear and concise, is Don Shiach's Grammar to 14, published by Oxford University Press. It has a section on basic grammar terms, punctuation and some spelling rules, and all in all, serves as a good introduction or revision of some key areas where students get confused, such as apostrophes. There is also a separate answer book for those tricky to work out questions!

I consider Grammar to 14 essential both in the classroom and for tuition. It is a useful reference book, and not oversized or imposing. It is user-friendly and most importantly, teenagers can tolerate it!
