Oboe

Before you are able to play the oboe you will need to purchase a reed. There are many different types of reed, but the wide and rather daunting looking selection need not be off-putting. The reed is the essential tool to playing the oboe, and careful selection is important even at an early stage. It is important to have a very flexible reed so as not to damage your playing muscles during the early stages of oboe playing. There are several places to buy reeds from, and often it is easy to buy online. It is best to buy two or three to start with, and the shop will usually allow you to try out the reeds and if they are unsuitable you can send them back. Beginner reeds usually cost around six poundsĀ and can be bought from the following websites:

http://www.howarth.uk.com/

http://britanniareeds.com/

Each reed has a description and so it is easy to find the reed most suitable for your needs. As a beginner, always choose a soft scrape.
