I have small hands and used to think that this was a big disadvantage to my piano playing. At university I would marvel at my fellow music students whose hand spans reached well over an octave. They would play the BIG romantic pieces with relative ease where as I would be stretching my hands uncomfortably to accommodate the pieces.
My small hands are one reason that I focused most of my repertoire on the music from the baroque/classical era; Scarlatti, Mozart, JS Bach and his sons, and Beethoven. I fell in love with this music while studying at university and am now very grateful for my small nimble hands which are better able to produce the fast repetitive fingerwork so prominent in music of the classical and baroque eras.
So it just goes to show that in relation to playing the piano size really doesn't matter!
