Hi there all novices, thought I would just share with you some of the books I had when I was a small child. The first ones I started working my way through was the Piano Time series by Pauline Hall. They are full of recognisable pieces, short exercises and they gradually explain different rhythms, time periods and the theory. The student feels they have accomplished something as after learning something new they can play a famous piece!
Hanon Virtuoso - Exercises Book 1 is also very good worked alongside as strengthening exercises and warm ups, good contrary motion exercises and for the student to feel more comfortable on the keys. The teacher can create various exercises within the pieces too.
I believe Sight Reading is a very important skill to be introduced as early as possible. Often seen as just a task in an exam, it is very important to conquer for the student to be able to teach themselves new pieces and to push themselves on without the aid of the teacher eventually. So they don't feel daunted by new, tricky parts in the music or want to tackle something with confidence. So I recommend Sight Reading Grade 1 / 2 early as possible!
Thanks . Enjoy the Piano! Go find some music and have a go!
