Playing the piano is something which I initially did for fun and as an exploration of the possibilities of sound, and this approach informs my approach to teaching. If a pupil is goal driven and merely wishes to get exam grades under their belts then this approach can certainly be catered for but the more 'musical' approach is my primary aim. I usually incorporate an element of improvisation into my lessons although this is by no means compulsory. This certainly tends to encourage an element of creativity in a pupil's music making and this I consider an important part of making music.
