It's quite natural to feel some nervousness before an exam or a performance. It proves that playing music means a great deal to you and that you're aware of the challenge that you are about to face. Start thinking of this nervousness as a positive emotion.... easier said than done perhaps, but here are a few steps you can take:

  • Prepare your material well and be comfortable with it. Try not to overstretch yourself by playing something beyond your present level.
  • Ask your teacher to put you through a mock exam so that you can become familiar with the exam format. He/she can even give you a score it they think it might help.
  • Try some breathing and warm-up exercises beforehand. Your tutor will know some appropriate ones.
  • Smile and say hello to the examiner. They are human and it will make you feel less intimidated if you break the ice a little bit.
  • Remember that although it is an exam, it is also a performance.......so enjoy it !
